DONATION CHEST FOR ORPHANS

Donation chest for orphans. Photo: U. Muzikants 2018

Author: Unknown
Date: 1755.
Dimensions, mm:
Material: Metal, wood
Technique: carving, polychrome
Restoration: Unknown

On April 22, 1755, the hexagonal block installed and plastered in the Riga Cathedral was supplemented with an inscription plate, on the top of which there is a silhouetted figure of Christ with a child in his arms. On the sides are figures of beggers, at the bottom – the head of a winged angel. The inscription shows that the funds are intended for orphans:

Listen, reader, listen to the orphans, / help them willingly in their sorrows / cares and tears! / What you have done for orphans during your life / will bear fruit for you even after death, / because Christ has promised the kingdom of heaven. April 22, 1755. Restored 1834 and 1889
