From Gotthard Welling Family Tomb only two family coats of arms have survived – those of the Welling and Töpel families. Dr. iur. Gotthard Welling was the son of Philipp Welling and Margarethe Töpel.
Riga City Syndic Dr. iur. Gotthard Welling (1546–1586). Matriculated at the University of Rostock. He was against the Polish King Stephen B?thory’s proposal to found a Catholic University in Riga. Wrongly accused, he was executed as a supporter of Polish government and traitor of the city’s interests during the Calendar Unrest in 1586. Welling was publicly beheaded on Riga Town Hall Square two and a half months after he had married Anna Witting. Welling’s son Gotthard from his first marriage with Wendula Rigemann (1570–1585) is also buried in the Dom Cathedral next to his father. Riga Town Council member, President of the Tartu Royal Consistory, Swedish Army Colonel Gotthard Welling drowned near Narva.
