Wooden epitaph of Riga city councilor Johan Friedrich Schick (11.01.1674 – 16.08.1747).
Johan Friedrichs Schick was born in Stralsund, came to Riga as a merchant, was appointed elder of the Great Guild, and in 1730 became the councilor of the Riga city.
Johann Friedrich Schick’s epitaph has the typical composition of wooden epitaphs with a strictly expressed two-part division: the upper part – the coat of arms, the lower – an inscription plate with a memorial text.
The coat of arms is a split shield. On the right side is a half-eagle on a gold background, on the left – three hexagonal gold stars on a black background, one below the other. Above the shield is a helmet with crown decoration. In Kleinode, three feathers /gold, black, gold /.
The lower part is designed as a cartouche. Text in German:
„Zum Andenken des wohledelgeb. Gestrengen und wohlweisen Herrn Johan Friedrich Schick dieser Stadt wegland wohl verdienten Raths un Ober Kāmmer herrn gebohren zu Stralsund den 11 Januaeii 1674. sanft und selig entschlafen d. 16. Aug. 1747 in einem ruhmvollen
After von 73 Jahr 7 monat un 5 tage”.
