Scenes from the life of St. Martin

  • Commissioner: von Manteuffel family
  • Drawing: Ernst Friedrich Tode (1858–1932)
  • Created: Ernst Friedrich Tode’s workshop in Riga, 1902.
  • Material: Painted glass and lead
  • Size: 845×150 cm

The stained-glass window depicts two scenes from the saint’s life: A young rider on a horse by the gates of Amiens cuts his cloak in half and shares it with a praying beggar. At night he saw in a dream Christ, covered with the mantle given to the beggar. The Savior said, “I was the beggar you helped.”
The second scene depicts old bishop in the bed of the illness, where St. Martin replies to the disciples: “Brethren, let me turn to heaven rather than to earth.”
