In the summer of 1891, a cycle of murals was discovered in the northern Hall of the Riga Cathedral. At the time of uncovering, the painting “Family Tree” was in a relatively good condition. The wall painting vanished and its paint layers disappeared as the state of the preservation deteriorated during the 20th century. It completely disappeared during the storm of June 6, 1989, overflowing the attic above the painting during roof replacement.
In the center of the painting is a family tree of Christ, on the side of which stood the prophets of the coming of Christ, the prophets Daniel and Jesse.
According to the research of J. Frey, Master of Theology, in the 19th century the vignette with the Prophet Jesse was inscribed: (E) TE (GREDIETVRVIRGADERA) DIC (EJE) SSEET. Jesse 11: 1: “Et egedietur virga de radice Jesse”. “A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse;.” The vignette of the Prophet Daniel has the following inscription (IS) MV (TÆTAT) E (STR) AN (SFERT etc.). Daniel 2:21 “Ipse mutatis mutandis transfert regna” – “He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others.”
