Wooden epitaph of the burgomaster Theodor Heinrich von Dreiling (21.12.1702-6.08.1766).
The epitaph is a composition typical of wooden epitaphs with a strictly defined two-part division: the coat of arms in the upper part, the inscription plate with the memorial text in the lower part. The lower part is designed as a cartouche of a hand ornament. Text in German:
„Zum Andeneken
Das Magnifiei Hochwohlgebe und Hochgelahrten Herrn
Theodor Heinrich von Dreilingen
Dieser Kayserlichen Stadt weyland
Hochverdienten zweiten Burgermeisters
Und Ober Waysen = Herrn
Gebohren den 22sten December 1702
Gestorben den 6ten August 1766
Seiners ruhmlichen Alters 63 Jahr 7 Monaht 15 Tag”.
The upper part with the coat of arm is larger in size. In the center of the coat of arms is a shield, in the main part of which are three lilies in gold and blue. In a shield, a black goat on a silver background on a dark base. Above the shield, the latticed helmet with twisted crown-shaped decoration. A small figure is in the kleinod of helmet. Acanthus leaf decoration runs along both sides of the helmet and along the upper edge of the shield. An ornament with acanthus leaf elements is used in the decoration of the shield along the lower edge. On the sides of the shield are supporters of coat of arm: on the right side – a crowned eagle, on the left side – a crowned lion.
Epitaph of the Theodor Heinrich v. Dreilingen is typical example of wooden epitaphs, which were widely produced during 17th -18th century, but survived to this day only in small numbers. It completes the overall picture of the development of memorial monuments in the art history of Latvia
